My Eldest, who has very bad tinnitus was trawling the net looking for health groups with the same problem. He came upon this at MedicineNet.com. I don't know what other gems are on there, but THIS was. I nealy split my gusset laughing. Here goes...punchline under the cut for those of a nervous disposition. Cut and pasted verbatim.....

"Tinnitus is a ringing, swishing, or other type of noise that seems to originate in the ear or head. In many cases it is not a serious problem, but rather a nuisance that may in time go away. It is not a single disease, but a symptom of an underlying condition.

"In almost all cases, only the patient can hear the noise."

So, to re-cap. There are 36 million sufferers - each of whom has been contacted personally. it seems - AND IN ALMOST ALL CASES...ONLY THE PATIENT CAN HEAR THE NOISE. Is speechless. Next time my son visits I'll stand next to him and see if *I* can hear anything. Mad, or what. And this is not a spoof but a genuine site. If any of you suffer from this distressing syndrome - I'd avoid this site if I were you.

Part Ten of Inca tomorrow! :D

LOL! That's hysterical. My hubby has tinnitus too, and I don't recall ever being able to hear it! What nonsense. Guess it goes to show, you can't trust anything everything you read on the web.

Well, it cheered up Andrew's day no end. Best laugh he'd had all week! He kept going up to different friends and asking "can YOU hear anything?" Ridiculous.

ROTFL!!!!

I have an interesting book (German) about tinnitus. Of course the years when I went out regularly, I had that problem too. (Don't have it anymore. At least not that I notice.) You usually don't notice sounds like your own heartbeat because we're so used to them, and therefore the authors suggested that you can learn to tune out tinnitus too, and offer tips how to do that. I'm sure there are books like that in English too, it's worth looking into.

He did find an excellent site eventually with good info and advice from fellow sufferers. I have it occasionally, but he has it really loudly. Years of abusing his body has taken its toll. Bless him. Now he's clean it's come to haunt him.

Of course other people can't hear it, but in some cases the sound can be registered with special equipment. In most cases it can't, though.

I don't have tinnitus, though I sometimes have this ringing in my ears when I have a bad cold, but I learned about tinnitus in school.

Yes, it's a damn nuisance. He keeps the tv on even when he's not watching to tune the noise out. I'm glad he found a decent site after all that!

I have tinnitus. What? Can't you hear it Issi???

Anyway, seriously I do have tinnitus. I have suffered a vitamin B12 deficiency over the past year and tinnitus is thought to be one of the symptoms, which is not to stay that it's the only reason people get tinnitus. It's not there all the time and thankfully it's not overly-loud but when I become conscious of it, it's bloody annoying. It's not ringing but a kind of gentle clicky/swishy sound. So hard to describe to someone, I sometimes wish other people could hear it! LOL!

*tries not to laugh*

What is this thing? Like hearing a small tone constantly?

Sometimes it's very BIG tone, as my son has. And it can make you deaf. It's a nuisance to some - but there are people who can't live with the noise and end their lives. Very sad.

See, I knew there was a reason so as not to laugh!

I can't stand many sounds (thanks god I don't hear a constant tone) but I think more or less I understand.

Well, the ARTICLE was very funny - it's the condition that isn't. I still am chuckling over the inept entry in the info section. :D
