The Lovesong of Samwise Gardiner
Dec. 23rd, 2007 06:18 pmA MERRY CHRISTMAS to all my friends! And a huge thank you to all those who sent cards and pressies and lovely things for Ru. Bless. I can't possibly name you all - I'm bound to leave someone out. So THANK YOU, EVERYONE!
I sincerely hope you all have a loving and peaceful Christmas and New Year. Much Love. Ru xxxxx
And, yes, two posts in two days. But I couldn't leave you at this festive season with the previous story - so here's another snippet - this time Sam talks about Frodo.
The Lovesong of Samwise Gardiner
Describe him? Let's see. That's not easy, my lad.
He was beautiful, is all.
Beautiful as sun dappled through the leaves of an oak tree.
Strong as one, too - an oak, I mean,
despite his seeming frailty.
He was beautiful - still is, I 'spect,
for no-one changes there, do they?
I don't think they do, anyway.
Dunno. I hope he won't -
I can't imagine Mr Frodo an old man,
with white curls and wrinkled cheeks.
No, his hair will still be as brown as chestnuts,
when he's eleventy nine, it will,
and his eyes still as blue as forget-me-nots.
Ar, they will, lad, make no mistake.
They were eyes to rival any Elf's, they were.
And they sparkled when he laughed, which was often,
before.... Before.
Those eyes smiled at me when he left, too -
as he stood firm on the shifting deck,
his feet braced against the rocking,
and smiled at me
as if he was happy again - and he was happy, son,
he was.
Do you remember him?
No, I don't suppose you do,
you were only a baby when he went.
Well, he was beautiful.
Yes, I know I said it before, but he was.
No, not beautiful like your Mum -
she's beautiful with plump, pink warmth,
like an apple ripe for plucking.
Frodo was...diff'rent.
No, can't say as I can explain it.
There was something not quite Hobbity
about him, not quite ordinary, not like us,
not round and fat and... comfortable.
There was something fey about Frodo,
like a secret not ever told.
You could see it, even if you couldn't explain it.
But he was beautiful. Like a song you could see, he was -
like...like the taste of summer,
or the smell of winter snow -
the lark-song high in the heavens.
Something you couldn't touch - but there.
Aye - he was beautiful, my Frodo. He was.
Just beautiful. We called you after him
because you're beautiful, too.
Hobbity beautiful, where he
was...
...Yes, Rosie, my love. We're coming!
Now, Frodo-lad, pick up the beans
and let's get them in before Mum
thinks we ate 'em all!
What? Oh, all right, lad.
Tomorrow I'll tell you about Frodo and
the butterflies again. You like that tale,
don't you?
Yes, we did laugh at it when it happened,
both of us.
Naked, and covered in butterflies he was,
standing in the water, in the river
down by the bluebell wood.
But that's a story for tomorrow, Fro...
and stop eating the beans! There'll be
none left for our supper!
Was he beautiful covered in butterflies?
He'd have been beautiful covered in sh...
...oh, sorry, Rosie-love.
Forgetting my company for a minute,
there, I was.
Was it Mr Frodo I was talking about, y're asking?
Yes, I was telling young Frodo, here, about...
never mind, my love - here's the beans...
