Oh, dear, they'd come so far toward being friendly, and now Elijah's angry again. I love the colorful phrases salted through the narrative, and some aren't really strange to me. "Stout" was used in the same way by people where I lived as a young girl in Kentucky, and Lawks a mussy is similar to what my mother used to say "lawsamercy."
